About Joe

A serious musician
who teaches gently.

Hi — I'm Joe. I teach piano in students' homes across Madison, Guilford, Fairfield and Westport, and I've been doing it since 2010. The thing I care most about is that the instrument stays interesting. That means the classical repertoire and the movie theme you can't stop humming both belong in the same lesson.

My own training is classical: a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Western Connecticut State University and a Bachelor of Arts with a music concentration from the University of Connecticut, studying under Neal Larrabee and Patricia Lutnes. But I also spent years playing in a rock band, and I write and arrange my own music — so I'm equally comfortable teaching a Chopin nocturne, a jazz voicing, or how to write your own song.

I work with complete beginners, students preparing for college auditions, and a lot of adults who tell me they "should have kept up with it." That last group is my favorite. It is genuinely not too late.

Young Beginners

A first real relationship with the instrument. We build reading, rhythm and hand position through music kids actually want to play — and keep it moving fast enough that it never feels like homework.

Piano teaching is handed down person to person. Mine traces through Neal Larrabee and Patricia Lutnes, and from there — teacher to pupil, generation by generation — back to Beethoven himself.
