A classical foundation,
taught without ceremony.
I've been teaching piano on the Connecticut shoreline since 2010, almost entirely in students' own living rooms. It's a deliberate choice: people practice on the instrument they own, and lessons go better when the teacher meets it too.
My training is classical — a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Western Connecticut State University and a Bachelor of Arts with a music concentration from the University of Connecticut, studying with Neal Larrabee and Patricia Lutnes. My recording of Debussy was picked up as an "Artist's Pick" on Spotify and has passed three thousand streams.
But I also spent years in a rock band, and I write and arrange my own material. So a lesson here might be a Chopin nocturne one week and a chord chart for a song off the radio the next. Both are real musicianship. I've never seen much reason to rank them.
Students range from six-year-olds meeting the keyboard for the first time to teenagers building college audition programs to adults who put it down decades ago and want it back. The adults are the ones who surprise themselves most.
