What to Wear for a Winter Photo Session in Connecticut

A Connecticut Family Portrait Style Guide

One of the most common questions I get is: "What should we wear?" Winter sessions in Connecticut have a magic all their own. Crisp shoreline air, soft diffused light, and cozy textures create beautifully atmospheric photos, and the right outfit choices will make your images feel warm, timeless, and full of life. This guide makes it easy.

Choose Your Look

Winter light is soft and even, it's incredibly flattering and forgives a wide range of colors. Rich, deep tones look stunning, and so do clean, crisp neutrals. Pick one of the three palettes below as your starting point, or mix and match. When in doubt, reach out and I'll help!

Palette 01
Classic Winter
Deep navy, ivory, camel, and warm grey. Timeless and polished, a clean, classic palette that looks sharp and sophisticated in winter light.

Styling tip: Anchor the group in ivory or camel, then use navy as the strong accent. Camel coats, navy knitwear, and ivory or grey accessories all photograph beautifully together. Avoid having multiple people in the darkest tone, it can feel heavy in group images.
Palette 02
Cosy & Warm
Cream, oat, warm tan, soft terracotta, and toffee. Soft and inviting, a warm, neutral palette that feels like a cozy winter at home. Timeless and relaxed in any setting.

Styling tip: This palette is beautifully cohesive, the tonal range means everyone looks like they belong together without feeling matchy. Let cream and oat be the dominant tones, with terracotta and toffee as accent colors on one or two family members.
Palette 03
Rich & Deep
Burgundy, forest green, charcoal, and cream. Bold and dramatic, deep jewel tones with a cream anchor. Stunning in winter light, especially against bare trees or frost.

Styling tip: Cream is essential here as a lightening anchor, without it, the palette can feel very heavy. One person in cream or ivory, one in forest green or burgundy, and charcoal as a supporting tone creates a balanced, striking group look.
What to Wear

Clothing

  • Layers are key, they photograph beautifully and can be managed as the session progresses
  • Coats, chunky knits, scarves, and hats all add wonderful texture to winter images
  • You don't have to suffer for the photos, dress warmly and we can always remove a layer briefly for a shot
  • Coordinate rather than match exactly, similar tones with slight variation looks intentional
  • For kids: warm, comfortable layers, a happy, warm child always makes a better photo than a shivering one
  • Cable-knit jumpers, woollen coats, and soft fleeces all look fantastic on camera

Footwear

  • Clean leather or suede boots are perfect, ankle or knee-high both work well
  • Wellies are a practical and photogenic choice for muddy parks or fields
  • Avoid very bright or heavily branded trainers unless they fit your overall style

Accessories

  • Scarves, woolly hats, and mittens look cozy and natural in winter sessions
  • Simple jewelry photographs best, delicate necklaces, small earrings
  • Sunglasses are best removed for most shots, they block the eyes and cause glare
Pro tip: Practical warmth is always the priority in winter. I'll work quickly and efficiently to keep you comfortable, but please dress for the cold, not the camera. A warm, happy family in cozy layers will always look better than an uncomfortable family in light clothes. Bring hand warmers if you have them!
Do's & What to Avoid
✓  DO
  • Rich, deep, or warm neutral tones

  • Chunky textures, wool, cable-knit, suede
  • Coordinating (not matching) outfits
  • Solid colors or subtle textures
  • Boots or clean leather shoes
  • Hats and mittens for kids
  • Outfits you already feel confident in
  • Dress warm, comfort first
✗  AVOID

  • Large logos or busy graphics
  • Very thin or summery fabrics
  • Everyone in the exact same color
  • Overly formal or uncomfortable attire
  • Brand-new clothes you haven't worn
  • Matching head-to-toe as a group
